How to become an EMDR therapist: training and accreditation
EMDR is generally not an entry-level profession. It is specialist training for mental-health professionals who already meet the legal and professional requirements of their jurisdiction.
The route depends on country and awarding body: first hold a profession and registration that permit psychotherapy; then complete recognised EMDR training with theory, practice and supervision; later you may pursue competency accreditation or certification. Basic training does not automatically make someone an accredited Practitioner, consultant or trainer.
1. Confirm professional eligibility
EMDR Europe requires entrants to approved training to hold current licensing or registration to provide psychotherapeutic services in their country and meet national-association criteria. Eligible professions are not identical everywhere.
Before paying, ask the provider and national association in writing whether your qualification, registration, experience and current role meet entry requirements. A private course cannot replace legal professional eligibility.
2. Separate training from accreditation
Standard training teaches the protocol through theory, practice and supervision. Practitioner accreditation is a later competency process involving experience and supervision; Consultant and Trainer are further pathways.
The United States uses EMDRIA-specific names and requirements, while Europe uses the EMDR Europe framework through national associations. “Trained”, “certified”, “accredited” and “Level II” should not be translated as universal equivalents.
3. Check a course before enrolling
Verify approving body, trainer identity, entry criteria, theory and practice hours, included supervision, client requirements, assessment, make-up policy, total fee and whether the course supports the accreditation route you want.
Be cautious of courses promising authority to treat trauma without an underlying profession, omitting supervised practice or using “certification” without naming the awarding body and validity period.
4. Build responsible, visible practice
Competence continues beyond a course through regular supervision, consent, assessment, clinical records, data protection, continuing education and referral where a case exceeds scope.
