HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT

History of EMDR: Francine Shapiro, origins and evolution

EMDR began developing in the late 1980s through Francine Shapiro’s work. Its origin is often reduced to an observation during a walk, but the later clinical and scientific development matters more than that anecdote.

Short answer

Francine Shapiro originated the procedure first called Eye Movement Desensitization (EMD) and published early studies in 1989. As reprocessing, a broader protocol and the Adaptive Information Processing model were incorporated, the name became EMDR. History explains origin; current evidence must be judged from later research and guidelines.

From an observation to a clinical hypothesis

Historical accounts place Shapiro’s observation in 1987: certain eye movements appeared to accompany reduced distress around thoughts. That episode prompted systematic testing; it was not itself proof of a therapy.

The well-known park-walk story is best treated as biographical origin rather than evidence. Treatment validity depends on controlled studies, replication, reviews and comparison with alternatives.

The 1989 publications

In 1989 Shapiro published work on a procedure then called EMD for traumatic memories and PTSD. These were early, small studies whose claims required further testing.

They began decades of research, methodological criticism, component analysis and protocol refinement. Citing the first paper alone cannot represent the current evidence base.

Why EMD became EMDR

“Reprocessing” signalled a broader proposal than desensitisation: history, preparation, assessment, processing, installation, body scan, closure and reevaluation.

Eye movements were no longer described as the complete therapy. EMDR developed as a structured psychotherapy that can also use other forms of bilateral stimulation.

International expansion and current status

EMDR Europe dates its formal European introduction to a training Shapiro delivered in Amsterdam in 1993. National associations, training standards, accreditation, research and humanitarian programmes later developed across many countries.

Institutional history does not validate every clinical claim. To understand what is supported today, consult independent guidelines and distinguish PTSD from emerging or unestablished applications.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who created EMDR therapy?

Francine Shapiro originated and developed the procedure in the late 1980s and published the first studies in 1989.

Was EMDR discovered during a walk in a park?

That is the best-known biographical account of the initial observation. It prompted formulation and testing of a procedure but is not evidence by itself.

Why was reprocessing added to the name?

The name changed from EMD to reflect a broader model than distress reduction, involving memory processing within a structured protocol.
