OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND EMDR

EMDR and occupational therapy: roles and coordination

Occupational therapy supports participation in meaningful activities, routines, roles and environments. EMDR is psychotherapy addressing defined clinical targets. They may meet within one team, but are not synonyms or substitutes.

Short answer

Literature describes occupational therapists working with people with PTSD to restore sleep, self-care, work, study, relationships and participation, while also noting a lack of specific effectiveness studies. EMDR may address traumatic memories and symptoms when delivered by an eligible, trained practitioner. Coordination can connect symptom change with daily functioning; there is no universally established “OT-EMDR” protocol, and completing EMDR training does not by itself expand the legal scope of a profession.

Different and potentially complementary goals

EMDR formulates target memories, triggers, beliefs and responses within psychological treatment. Occupational therapy assesses how health, environment, habits and demands affect everyday participation.

A person may process a crash while also needing a graded return to driving or work. Shared goals can prevent questionnaire improvement from remaining disconnected from daily life.

What occupational-therapy evidence says

The PTSD scoping review found multidisciplinary practice and attention to trauma’s effect on occupations. It also concluded that more effectiveness studies are required.

AOTA describes work with routines, roles, independence and participation. These contributions do not make every occupational intervention trauma-focused psychotherapy or prove one EMDR combination.

Who may deliver EMDR

EMDRIA training eligibility focuses on mental-health professionals with a compatible degree, licence or supervised pathway. Exact rules vary by jurisdiction and training provider.

Occupational therapists may have broad mental-health scope in some places and different limits elsewhere. Check licence, competence, supervision, professional insurance and authority to provide psychotherapy, not only a course certificate.

Coordinate without duplication or scope drift

With consent, a team can share functional goals, dysregulation signs, adaptations and needed progress. It does not need every detail of the traumatic event.

Ask who owns each goal, how crises are managed, which between-session tasks apply and what indicators will change the plan. Coordination should reduce burden, not add treatment without a clear rationale.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can an occupational therapist provide EMDR?

It depends on licence, legal scope, mental-health training, supervision and jurisdiction; a course alone is not sufficient.

Does occupational therapy treat PTSD?

It may address functional impact and daily participation in multidisciplinary care; specific effectiveness evidence remains limited.

Is there a standard OT-EMDR protocol?

We did not find a universal combined protocol established as an independent treatment.
