Does insurance cover EMDR therapy in Spain?
A policy that includes psychology, or a public system that offers psychotherapy, does not guarantee direct access to EMDR, a particular practitioner or a fixed number of sessions. Access depends on the pathway, indication and current terms.
There is no universal answer. For private insurance, check whether psychology is included, whether referral or prior authorisation is required, which practitioners are in network, session limits, copay and out-of-network reimbursement. Spain’s public system includes mental-health care and psychotherapy, but its general service portfolio does not promise EMDR availability in every centre.
Private insurance: six details to confirm
Read the individual policy and ask in writing whether it covers clinical or health psychology rather than only a helpline or wellbeing app. Confirm whether medical referral, prior authorisation, a covered diagnosis or an in-network practitioner is required.
Ask about annual or episode session limits, copay, waiting periods, reimbursement and whether an invoice from your chosen practitioner is eligible. General marketing pages never override the individual contract.

- Referral or authorisation
- Network or free choice
- Session limit and waiting period
- Copay or reimbursement percentage
- Documentation and exclusions
Is EMDR billed as a separate benefit?
Coverage is often organised around a psychology appointment, psychotherapy, practitioner or diagnosis rather than one named technique. “Psychology is covered” and “I can receive EMDR from this practitioner” are therefore separate questions.
Ask the practitioner whether they work with the insurer, whether the appointment is in network or private, and which documents they can provide. Do not send unnecessary clinical details before confirming a secure channel and the insurer’s requirements.
Spain’s public health system
The common SNS portfolio includes diagnosis, follow-up and individual, group or family psychotherapies within mental-health care. Access generally depends on the referral pathway and how each service is organised.
The general portfolio does not ensure EMDR, a chosen practitioner or a particular frequency in your area. Ask primary care or mental-health services which evidence-based options are available, expected waiting times and alternatives if EMDR is unavailable.
Compare real cost and continuity
Estimate the likely total cost, not only one-session copay: authorisation, annual limits, travel, cancellations, reports and what happens when cover ends. An apparently inexpensive route may be interrupted if the session allowance is too small.
Before starting, agree goals, frequency, progress reviews and a plan if coverage changes. Do not alter treatment or delay urgent care while an administrative claim is unresolved.
Frequently asked questions
Do Spanish insurers such as Sanitas, DKV or Adeslas cover EMDR?
It depends on the policy, network, authorisation and practitioner. Some policies include psychology sessions, but that does not automatically confirm EMDR or out-of-network choice.
Is EMDR available through Spain’s public health system?
The SNS includes mental-health care and psychotherapies, but the general portfolio does not guarantee EMDR in every centre. Ask the relevant regional service about available options.
Can I claim reimbursement for a private therapist?
Only where the policy allows it and its requirements are met. Confirm the percentage, limits, documents, professional eligibility and authorisation before booking.
