APPS AND SELF-HELP

Can you do EMDR alone at home or with an app?

Videos, apps and devices can imitate bilateral stimulation. They may reproduce a movement, sound or tapping pattern, but they do not deliver the full clinical protocol.

Short answer

EMDR therapy should not be reduced to self-stimulation while recalling traumatic memories. EMDRIA’s virtual guidance explicitly excludes self-EMDR services without live guidance and requires administration by a trained clinician. Assessment, target selection, pace, consent, closure and risk response cannot safely be automated.

What a tool can and cannot do

An app can display a moving dot or alternate sounds. It cannot assess dissociation, risk, substance use, stability, differential diagnosis, preparation or whether a memory is an appropriate target.

Easy access does not make a tool a treatment or establish effectiveness for your situation. Treat rapid-cure claims and guarantees with particular caution.

Risks of unsupported processing

Deliberately activating disturbing material may increase arousal, flashbacks, panic, disconnection, insomnia or confusion. Without a practitioner, no one is monitoring signals, adjusting the task, stopping or helping to close.

This does not mean every alternating stimulus is harmful; it means clinical context is part of the intervention.

Self-care is not self-EMDR

Breathing, sensory orientation or agreed routines may be self-care. They do not need an EMDR label or deliberate pairing with intense memories.

Ask your therapist which between-session resources are appropriate and which should not be used to process material alone.

How to assess an online offer

Check identity and profession, EMDR training, legal location, privacy, emergency contact and live practitioner presence. Distinguish a video appointment from an automated subscription.

If an app causes disorientation, risk or intense distress, stop using it and seek professional help; contact emergency services for immediate danger.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I use tapping to calm myself?

Use only regulation strategies that are safe for you and keep them separate from attempting intense memory processing without support.

Can a YouTube video provide EMDR therapy?

No. A video cannot assess, adapt, obtain ongoing consent or respond to what happens.

Is online EMDR the same as self-EMDR?

No. Online therapy involves a trained practitioner present live, assessment and a safety plan.
