COLLECTIVE TRAUMA AND EARLY INTERVENTION

Group EMDR: G-TEP, IGTP and evidence limits

G-TEP and IGTP are EMDR-related protocols designed for groups, particularly after collective traumatic events. R-TEP is an individual protocol for recent episodes; similar acronyms do not make them interchangeable.

Short answer

Group EMDR protocols aim to expand access and organise structured intervention without necessarily asking each participant to disclose their story to the group. A 2026 meta-analysis pooled twelve G-TEP studies and found a large reduction in PTSD symptoms, but methodological, population and comparator differences require caution. It does not validate every bilateral-tapping workshop.

How G-TEP, IGTP and R-TEP differ

G-TEP means Group Traumatic Episode Protocol and IGTP means Integrative Group Treatment Protocol. They use group structures and, depending on the protocol, worksheets, drawing and self-administered bilateral stimulation.

R-TEP means Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol and is delivered individually. All relate to recent or continuing traumatic episodes, but training, format, sequence and evidence are not identical.

What recent evidence found

The 2026 meta-analysis included twelve G-TEP studies and reported a large effect size for PTSD symptoms. A pooled estimate summarises available studies; it cannot remove bias, heterogeneity or differences in controls and follow-up.

Evidence must be read alongside population, time since the event, measures, responsible practitioners and comparison care. Results after collective trauma cannot automatically be extrapolated to every diagnosis or group.

Privacy, selection and safety

The format may reduce the need to describe details in front of others, but it does not remove confidentiality, assessment, consent or risk duties. Programmes should explain what is shared, who can participate and how intense activation is managed.

A group cannot replace individual care where needs require personal assessment. It should also not be delivered during continuing danger without integrating material safety and local support.

How to assess a programme

Ask which exact protocol is offered, how the team is trained, which population has supporting evidence, how outcomes are measured and which referral route exists. “EMDR-based” does not identify a procedure by itself.

Language, culture, accessibility and coordination matter after disaster, war, migration or collective violence. Rapid delivery should not sacrifice voluntary participation, follow-up or alternatives.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is G-TEP EMDR therapy in a group?

It is an EMDR-related group protocol for traumatic episodes. It requires specific structure and training and is not equivalent to any group bilateral exercise.

Is R-TEP also a group protocol?

No. R-TEP is an individual protocol for a recent traumatic episode; G-TEP and IGTP are group formats.

Must people tell the group what happened?

Protocols can limit public disclosure, but each programme should explain its process, privacy and response to risk.
