HEALTH ANXIETY

EMDR for health anxiety: evidence and limitations

Health anxiety may involve body checking, repeated information searches, reassurance seeking, catastrophic interpretation and avoidance. It is important to address genuine medical symptoms while recognising when worry has begun to dominate life.

Short answer

The NHS describes CBT and, for some people, medication as usual options for health anxiety. EMDR is not an established standard treatment for the problem. It may have a role when medical trauma or co-occurring PTSD is present, without replacing appropriate medical assessment or work on checking and reassurance.

Anxiety does not make a symptom imaginary

A person may have genuine sensations or illness and also develop persistent worry. The aim is not to dismiss symptoms, but to understand how interpretation, vigilance, searching and reassurance affect distress.

Concerning physical changes need the appropriate healthcare route. Psychotherapy should not be used to conclude that “everything is anxiety” or contradict medical advice outside professional competence.

Primary treatment and EMDR evidence

The NHS describes CBT and medication for some people. CBT commonly addresses interpretations, checking, safety seeking, body-focused attention and gradual return to avoided activities.

There is insufficient support for presenting EMDR as general treatment for health anxiety. A memory of diagnosis, hospitalisation, medical error or loss may matter, but processing it does not automatically change the current pattern.

Medical trauma and coordination

Intrusions, nightmares, avoidance or hypervigilance after medical care may justify assessment for PTSD and medical trauma. The plan can distinguish the traumatic memory from present health uncertainty.

Ask how care is coordinated with medicine, which signs need consultation, what EMDR would target and how checking or avoidance will be measured. A therapist should not tell you to stop prescribed medication or indicated tests.

Signs of a responsible offer

Avoid promises to remove physical symptoms, uncover their emotional cause or prove that illness comes from trauma. Psychotherapy cannot establish those claims.

Look for a practitioner who respects uncertainty, uses observable goals and can offer CBT or alternatives if memory work does not address the main problem.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can EMDR cure health anxiety?

No outcome can be promised. EMDR is not an established standard treatment for health anxiety; CBT is a usual option and assessment should define the main problem.

Can medical trauma increase health anxiety?

It may contribute for some people, especially with intrusions, avoidance or hypervigilance, but it does not explain every case or replace medical and psychological assessment.

Should therapy replace medical tests?

No. Medical decisions belong with competent healthcare professionals. Therapy can address worry and behaviour without invalidating symptoms or clinical advice.
