ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

EMDR after a road traffic accident: evidence and process

After an accident, people may experience startle, images, nightmares, driving fear, avoidance, guilt, pain or concern about recovery. Many early reactions reduce over time; others persist and need clinical assessment.

Short answer

Road traffic accidents can cause PTSD, and guidelines recommending EMDR for PTSD apply when their criteria are met. Specific literature includes studies and reviews, but plans should integrate injury, pain, medication, safe driving and possible legal processes without imposing immediate intervention.

Assess more than the impact memory

Symptoms, duration, functioning, injury, pain, sleep, substance use, guilt and continued exposure to roads or news all matter. Driving fear may relate to PTSD, panic, phobia or realistic caution after injury.

A practitioner should coordinate with medicine and rehabilitation where appropriate. Psychotherapy does not determine fitness to drive or replace physical treatment.

Evidence and limitations

Reviews document PTSD after accidents and describe EMDR among trauma-focused treatments. The event-specific evidence base is smaller and more heterogeneous than the broader PTSD evidence.

Not every accident survivor needs EMDR, and avoiding driving during recovery does not itself establish a diagnosis. Assessment, change over time and preference guide timing.

What the plan may include

Targets may include the impact, aftermath, news, guilt, loss or body sensations. When behavioural fear persists, gradual and safe return to travel or driving may also be needed within an appropriate plan.

EMDR cannot establish legal responsibility, speed or memory accuracy. In litigation, clinical treatment should be separated from forensic assessment and suggestion avoided.

Questions before starting

Ask about experience in accident trauma, pain and medical coordination; how preparation will be assessed; and what happens if symptoms, dizziness, pain or medication effects increase.

Clarify frequency, goals, monitoring and alternatives. Soon after an accident, practical support, safety, rest and observation may matter more than immediate processing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is fear of driving after an accident PTSD?

Not necessarily. It may be part of PTSD, panic, phobia, pain or caution. Symptoms, duration, impact and assessment define the problem.

When should EMDR start after an accident?

There is no universal deadline. Safety, injury, symptoms, functioning, change over time and preference should guide timing.

Does EMDR replace physical rehabilitation?

No. It may address psychological symptoms, while injury, pain and fitness to drive need appropriate medical or rehabilitation care.
